ROSLINDALE

VILLAGE

Residents once called Roslindale the “garden suburb” of Boston. Today, they still enjoy the neighborhood’s natural beauty. Many of the area’s colonial homes are now condos that house the City’s growing population.

Roslindale Village is the original Main Street district. There's a vibrant shopping and dining area with unique shops and bistros. Downtown Boston is very easily accessible via the Commuter Rail to South Station or the MBTA Orange Line.

Named for the hills and dales in the area, Roslindale was part of Roxbury until it was annexed to the city of Boston in 1873. The neighborhood’s downtown has undergone a renaissance and what was a depressed area several decades ago transformed into what most people now call Roslindale Village. Roslindale's plentiful green spaces and an exciting restaurant scene, breweries and new businesses coming up, attracts families and young professionals looking to buy in a still approachable neighborhood despite soaring real estate prices.

ARNOLD

ARBORETUM

The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University is a botanical research institution and free public park, located in the Roslindale and Jamaica Plain neighborhoods. Established in 1872, it is the oldest public arboretum in North America. The landscape was designed by Charles Sprague Sargent and Frederick Law Olmsted and is the second largest "link" in the Emerald Necklace. The Arnold Arboretum's collection of temperate trees, shrubs, and vines has a particular emphasis on plants  from eastern United States and eastern Asia, where arboretum staff and colleagues are actively sourcing new material on plant collecting expeditions. The Arnold Arboretum supports research in its landscape and in its Weld Hill Research Building.

SHERRIN

WOODS

Sherrin Woods is a dog-friendly park located just minutes from 6 Littledale Street. The northern part of the site is comprised primarily of mature oaks, hickory, cherry, birch, and hemlock. The southern portion is filled-in wetlands that has gradually developed into a weedy thicket of non-native, invasive shrubs and small trees. There's a fairly level path appropriate for small children and toddlers.

Climbers will love Pine Rock, a cliff-face with one exposed side around 24' of slabby terrain. Two pairs of bolts at the top make for easy top-rope setup, and there is some potential for mixed natural/passive pro anchors to expand the range of your climbs; just make sure you bring a long static as the best tree is pretty far from the edge! The left-hand side of Pine Rock (from the Austin Street entrance) winds uphill, leading to shorter climbs, bouldering potential and some class 4 scrabbling. The trailhead is newly rehabbed with large boulders and peat.

GEORGE WRIGHT

GOLF COURSE

George Wright Golf Course is a municipal golf course in Roslindale and Hyde Park. The course was designed by Donald Ross, with the construction completed as one of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration (WPA) projects. It represents one of the least known but impressive examples of Ross' breathtaking design art. The course opened in 1938. The course is named for George Wright, a Hall of Fame baseball player.

After decades of contracted management, the City of Boston decided to take over operational control of the facility in 2004. The decision was made to provide the best golf experience possible for the city's residents at an affordable rate. Mark Mungeam was contracted by the City of Boston to renovate the course. Since taking over operations, George Wright has gradually returned to prominence as evidenced by being selected as a MGA Amateur Qualifying Site in 2009.

  • Selected in 2012, 2013, 2014 & 2015 as one of Golfweek’s "Best Courses You Can Play" list.

  • Voted 2009 Best Municipal Golf Course in Massachusetts by Golf Digest.

  • Named 14th Best Municipal in the United States in 2009 by Golfweek.

Over half the holes on the course include hills that often cause the golfer to hit blind shots. Somewhat narrow fairways guarded by large numbers of mature trees also make this relatively short course extremely challenging. The hill on the 12th hole approaching the green has been used for years by locals in the winter as a place for sledding and tobogganing.

The course is open seven days a week from April 1 through November 30.
